The Best Nut-Free Snacks for Sports and After-School Activities

Fueling active kids without nuts: what to pack for the sideline, the dance bag, and the drive between activities — with timing tips for before and after.

No Nuts! Chewy bars, wrapped and unwrapped, stacked

Between practices, games, and the mad dash from school to the field, active kids need fuel that’s portable, filling, and — for many teams and schools — nut-free. Here’s how to pack for activity without the allergen, and how to time it right.

Before activity: light and carb-forward

Right before exercise, you want quick, easy energy that won’t sit heavy. Keep it light:

  • Banana or apple slices
  • Pretzels or crackers
  • A lighter snack bar (our Chewy Chocolate Chip is 100 calories — easy on a pre-game stomach)

Give it 30–60 minutes before go-time if you can, so it settles.

After activity: protein to recover

Post-practice is when protein earns its keep, helping tired muscles bounce back. Reach for:

  • Greek yogurt or a cheese stick
  • A Protein Snack Bar with 12g of plant protein
  • Chocolate milk (a classic recovery combo — skip if dairy-allergic)
  • Hummus with veggies or crackers

Packing for the “team snack” duty

If you’re on team-snack rotation, remember you’re feeding everyone’s kids — which means allergies you may not know about. The safe default is nut-free, individually wrapped, and made in a nut-free facility, so no parent has to worry.

  • Individually wrapped keeps things sanitary and simple to hand out.
  • Nut-free-facility products avoid the cross-contact question entirely.
  • Shelf-stable means you can keep a stash in the car for the whole season.

A box of individually wrapped Chewy Chocolate Chip bars — 24 to a box — is practically built for team-snack day: safe for the whole roster and easy to pass down the bench.

The best sports snack is the one you actually have on you. Keep a car stash of nut-free, shelf-stable bars and you’ll never be caught empty-handed between school and the field.

The season-long stash

Set up a small bin in the car or sports bag with:

  1. A few individually wrapped snack bars (light, pre-activity)
  2. A couple of protein bars (recovery)
  3. A shelf-stable fruit option
  4. A refillable water bottle

Restock it weekly and the between-activities scramble disappears. Grab a Variety Pack so there’s a flavor for everyone in the carpool.
